What is Your Signature Sin?

They say we each have a signature sin. You know, like a chef’s specialty dish, one of those things that differentiates you from the others. There is one particular sin that defines you and makes you. The one you turn to again and again, the one you’ve developed to ugly perfection.

Chocolate. Coffee. Spaghetti. French Fries. Pizza.

Asking me to define my signature sin is like asking me to pick a favorite food.

Impossible.

I adore the many tantalizing flavors this life has to offer as deeply as I detest the sinfulness that creeps into my heart when I least expect it.

But to pick just one that I love or hate above all others?

Impossible.

This whole idea of a signature sin catapulted itself into my life when I offered to review a book for a friend.

I had barely opened the book when the concept leapt off the pages and dove straight into my heart.

“They say we each have a signature sin. You know, like a chef’s specialty dish, one of those things that differentiates you from the others. There is one particular sin that defines you and makes you. The one you turn to again and again, the one you’ve developed to ugly perfection.” Arabah Joy – Trust Without Borders.

Let’s see here, could mine be pride?

My heart craves recognition, and once I get a taste of it, I’m transformed into a kid in a candy store.

I want more, more, more!

But that certainly couldn’t be my signature sin, because I am plagued by so many other sinful tendencies.

…a judgemental heart, a controlling spirit, an impatient soul….

Just as a fly fisherman casts his line upon the waters to entice the fish below, the enemy is constantly luring me into his traps.

I sin….alot…and so do you!

They say we each have a signature sin. You know, like a chef’s specialty dish, one of those things that differentiates you from the others. There is one particular sin that defines you and makes you. The one you turn to again and again, the one you’ve developed to ugly perfection.

No matter what your signature sin is, or if you are, like me, unable to choose from the endless buffet of options, there is a path that leads to freedom.

When we’ve tried everything in our power to wriggle free from the hook and failed, it’s time for us to surrender to the only One who can truly set us free.

Arabah Joy’s book entitled “Trust without Borders” is filled with powerful stories that direct our attention to an even more powerful God. Arabah’s book shows us that we can trust God’s intentions, and when we learn to do that the spark of faith becomes a flame.

A flame that cannot be contained, a faith that cannot be quelled!

Her writing challenged me to develop a deeper understanding of who God is so that I can trust Him even in the dark.

When blackness closes in and I fear that I’ve lost my way, all I need to do is put on my faith-vision goggles and look to the One who is never without sight.

But here’s a little-known truth about faith…it must be practiced.

Just like a baby on the verge of taking their very first step, we must tenaciously and repetitively practice our faith if we ever hope to succeed.

We practice faith and we live trust.” - @ArabahJoy, Trust Without Borders. Click to Tweet
