Sometimes we can get so fixated on what we don’t have that we overlook all the good we already have.
Scripture memorization and meditation can keep us focused on God’s faithful character instead of wondering if He’s holding out on us. We can fill our minds with truth rather than swirling in anxiety about the unknown.
Build Patience While Waiting on God
Here are 10 verses for waiting on God and building patience in the process. Consider writing a favorite verse from the list and placing it in a strategic spot to see it often.
1. Hebrews 13:5
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” – Hebrews 13:5 NIV
While we’re not sitting around waiting for money to fall in our laps, we may sometimes feel that our problems could be fixed if we had more in the bank.
However, the Lord challenges us to be content and enjoy what we have because He’ll never leave us alone.
2. Psalm 27:14
“Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD! “- Psalm 27:14 NKJV
David penned these words confidently. He knew God strengthens those who wait on the Lord because he waited 13 years to become king after being anointed! While we wait, God often builds our character to prepare us for His calling.
We can trust the Lord to act in His timing and ways.
3. Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
Waiting on the Lord allows us to watch Him do the heavy lifting of changing our situation. We can trust His faithful character and serve His purposes instead of trying to fix everything ourselves.
When we can’t walk another step in our own strength, we can call on the Lord to equip us to run the next mile.
4. James 5:11
“See, we count as blessed those who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is very compassionate and merciful.” – James 5:11 HCSB
We tend to associate struggling with something bad, but Job’s distress revealed God’s compassion and mercy. Recognizing this good outcome can help us endure hard times as well.
When we hold fast to the Lord during difficult times and maintain our integrity, we can experience the Lord pouring out His goodness on us—even if our circumstances don’t change.
5. Isaiah 30:18
“Therefore the Lord is waiting to show you mercy, and is rising up to show you compassion, for the Lord is a just God. All who wait patiently for Him are happy.” – Isaiah 30:18 HCSB
God wanted to shower the people in this passage with mercy, but they sought to save themselves.
Sometimes the Lord may wait until we reach the end of our own power and call upon His name. We should seek God first and receive His grace.
6. Romans 8:25
“Now in this hope we were saved, yet hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with patience.” – Romans 8:25 HCSB
We’re saved into the secure hope that we’ll go to Heaven because of the shed blood of Jesus, His burial, and resurrection.
We can rely on the Spirit’s strength even when we can’t see God working. We can wait with eager patience because God hears our prayers.
7. Hebrews 11:6
“Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for the one who draws near to Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6 HCSB
God rewards those who diligently seek Him. Not some half-hearted try, but a real investigation into the Bible to learn His character.
We can’t force God to do something, but we can align our hearts with the Lord’s and receive the reward of a deeper love for Him.
8. Proverbs 20:22
“Don’t say, ‘I will avenge this evil!’ Wait on the Lord, and He will rescue you.” – Proverbs 20:22 HCSB
When we take matters into our own hands, we act in God’s place. Instead, we should let God make things right in His perfect timing.
We may not always see the outcome we want immediately, or even in this lifetime, but the Lord will prevail.
9. Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace, for it is trusting in You.” – Isaiah 26:3 HCSB
Our minds can spiral with anxious thoughts about an unknown future, but the Bible encourages us to fix our minds on the Lord. Focusing on God’s goodness, rather than our circumstances, allows God to grant us perfect, lasting peace.
We can rise above the noise by trusting God to make a way instead of worrying ourselves into disarray.
10. Isaiah 25:9
“On that day it will be said, ‘Look, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He has saved us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him. Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.’” – Isaiah 25:9 HCSB
Our waiting isn’t in vain. When the Lord’s salvation appears, we’ll confidently proclaim His provision.
We can rejoice in how we waited on God’s timing because He always exceeds anything our minds can fathom. We can recognize God as our God because He came through for us when we couldn’t save ourselves.
Cling to God’s Faithfulness in the Waiting
May the Word of God strengthen our hearts and souls so we can patiently endure our season of waiting. May we expect the Lord to come through in mighty ways to display His glory.
Don’t lose heart. God’s not done yet. The Lord has been faithful before, and He’ll be faithful again.
No matter what we’re waiting for today, we never have to wait for God to care about us.
